Tomsula beendet seine Headcoach-Karriere bei den 49ers damit gemäß dem Sieg-Niederlage-Verhältnis als schlechtester Coach seit Dennis Erickson (2003-04).
Die Saison wurde allerdings schon vor dem Start der Saison durch Abgänge von Schlüsselspielern, wie zum Beispiel Patrick Willis, Anthony Davis, Chris Borland, Frank Gore, Mike Iupati, Michael Crabtree, Perrish Cox, Chris Culliver und Justin Smith, verloren.
