San Francisco held only a walkthrough on Wednesday. The team said Mike Evans would not have practiced even if it had held a regular practice. The receiver left last Monday’s game against the Washington Commanders early because of Achilles irritation.

Evans had already missed the three practices leading up to the 23-17 win. He caught three passes for 94 yards in the first half of the game. After a 16-yard catch shortly before the end of the second quarter, he limped off the field and tried to stretch his lower leg in the tunnel. He did not return in the second half.

Shanahan leaves Evans’ status against Atlanta uncertain

“We had to manage it last week, and we’re managing it this week, too,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Shanahan said he did not know how long the issue would affect Evans in practice or in games. “We’ll see how the rest of the year goes.”

Shanahan did not, however, attribute the 49ers’ drop-off against Washington solely to Evans’ absence. After gaining 303 yards and recording 17 first downs on their way to a 20-3 halftime lead, San Francisco managed just 72 yards and three first downs in the second half. Three drives ended in three-and-outs.

The coach pointed to two sacks and the fact that the 49ers did not get the ball back until about a minute and a half remained. They ran the ball three times after that. Shanahan said the offense might have had more options if it had picked up a first down.

49ers also missing several receivers and Nick Bosa

Mike Evans has been an important part of the offense in his first season in San Francisco. Despite playing with broken ribs since Week 3, the 33-year-old has 27 catches for 420 yards and three touchdowns. The six-time Pro Bowler recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 11 NFL seasons with Tampa Bay. Last season, injuries limited him to 368 yards in eight games.

The 49ers are also currently without Ricky Pearsall, De’Zhaun Stribling, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson and Christian Kirk. Kirk could return as early as next week. Samuel was listed as unavailable on Wednesday because of a thigh injury.

Among those also unable to practice were edge rusher Nick Bosa, Garret Wallow, Marques Sigle, Luke Gifford, Siran Neal, Upton Stout and Mykel Williams. Bosa has not yet been cleared to return to practice after a calf injury that has kept him out of the past four games. Shanahan hopes he can participate on Thursday.

Safety Ashtyn Davis and linebacker Jaden Dugger were listed as limited. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw returned to practice after serving a one-game suspension. He received the suspension for a headbutt against Seattle’s Ernest Jones IV in Week 5.
