Unrest in Paris — Peter O’Reilly, executive vice president of club business, international events and league events, said at the annual fall meeting of team owners that security plans are being continually adjusted. The league is working closely with French and national authorities, as well as the U.S. State Department. NFL officials are also already on the ground in France. According to O’Reilly, that includes Senior Vice President of Security Cathy Lanier.

“There is nothing more important to us than the safety of the teams, the fans and everyone involved in this game,” O’Reilly said.

The league is monitoring its plans “hour by hour” and staying in close contact with both teams.

NFL Says Game at Stade de France Was Never in Jeopardy

According to O’Reilly, the league never considered canceling the game at Stade de France. The stadium is located in Saint-Denis on the outskirts of Paris. As evidence that events could go ahead, the NFL executive pointed to other sporting events in the city, including Tuesday night’s Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona.

The unrest spread across much of France last weekend. Rioters clashed with police, set cars on fire and broke into public buildings. Around 2,400 people were arrested, and thousands of businesses were damaged or looted, according to authorities.

The NFL does not consider its event an additional burden on local emergency services.

“We’re confident that we won’t have a negative impact on the resources that are still needed,” O’Reilly said.

The Saints traveled directly to Paris after their game against the New York Giants and are practicing in the region this week. The Steelers are expected to arrive closer to kickoff.

Nine International Games This Season

Looking ahead, O’Reilly pointed to the collective bargaining agreement, which allows for up to 10 international games per season. Nine games outside the United States are on the schedule this season. The league is evaluating whether to reach that maximum next season. In addition to maintaining continuity, the NFL is considering new regions, with Asia among the possibilities.

The league is not currently planning to set a mandatory arrival time for teams playing internationally. Following discussion of the Los Angeles Rams’ late arrival in Melbourne and their 7-27 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, that decision remains with the clubs. However, O’Reilly did not rule out standardizing the policy in the future.

Meanwhile, 49ers owner Jed York returned to the fall meeting after his suspension ended. York had been suspended for six games and fined $500,000 after being arrested in Ohio in August as part of a prostitution investigation. He entered no-contest pleas in two cases and stayed away from the 49ers during their 6-0 start to the season.

The game between the Steelers and the Saints is expected to take place as scheduled at Stade de France.
