With November approaching, a shared Super Bowl appearance for Los Angeles’ two teams now seems like a distant dream. SoFi Stadium will host Super Bowl 61 on Valentine’s Day. At the start of the season, high expectations had made a Rams-Chargers matchup there seem like an appealing possibility.

The Rams now sit at 2-4, despite having entered the season as clear favorites to win the Super Bowl. Matthew Stafford was expected to lead an offense featuring Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. At the same time, the defense seemed to have been bolstered by Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald. Together, Garrett and Donald have won five Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Chargers Off to an Incredible 0-6 Start

Things are even more tense for the Chargers. The injury-ravaged team has lost six straight games to open a season for the first time since 2000, when Jim Harbaugh was the team’s quarterback. After two 11-win seasons under Harbaugh, the Chargers entered this season with the fifth-best odds to win the title.

Hiring Mike McDaniel as play-caller for quarterback Justin Herbert was supposed to help the team take the next step. Instead, Herbert has taken a clear step backward under McDaniel. He has thrown five touchdown passes and eight interceptions so far, with a passer rating of 68.8. An makeshift offensive line has made things even tougher: Herbert has already been sacked 21 times and is on pace for a career-high 60 sacks.

After the 22-6 loss in Kansas City, Harbaugh said he would review every area during the bye week, including McDaniel’s status. Harbaugh stressed that he needed to assess the coaching staff’s work, his own performance, and the offense’s execution. Like Rams coach Sean McVay, he won’t accept injuries as an excuse.

Rams Lose Their Kicker—and the Game

For the Rams, a special teams decision quickly led to more problems. After the loss to Buffalo, McVay made a change at kicker. Harrison Mevis, who had made just five of nine field-goal attempts, was released. Blake Grupe, who had been on the Jets’ practice squad, was brought in as his replacement.

Grupe first made a 44-yard field goal against Arizona, but then injured his right knee while tackling Devin Duvernay after a 40-yard kickoff return. On Monday, it was announced that Grupe had suffered a torn ACL and would miss the rest of the season.

Without a kicker, the Rams failed on two fourth-down attempts in Cardinals territory and came up short on a two-point conversion. Punter Ethan Evans still gave Los Angeles a 16-15 lead late in the game with the first field goal of his professional career. Arizona then drove to the 29-yard line, helped in part by a controversial unnecessary roughness penalty on cornerback Josh Wallace. Chad Ryland then made his sixth field goal of the game to seal the 18-16 final score.

The Rams are also still waiting for a sack from either Donald or Garrett. More concerning is the news that Adams will miss up to 10 weeks with a torn hamstring.
