After losing 22-6 to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Los Angeles Chargers will review every area of the team during their bye week—including the work of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Head coach Jim Harbaugh announced the review after the team’s sixth loss in six games.

“We have to look forward and evaluate every part of what we do,” Harbaugh said. “My work, the coaches’ work, how we play and how we execute on offense. We have to evaluate all of it.”

Only the Miami Dolphins are also winless this season. Miami had a bye this week.

Worst start to a season since 2000

After two seasons with 11 wins each, Los Angeles is now 0-6 and off to its worst start since 2000. That year, the team lost its first 11 games, as it had in 1975. Three of the Chargers’ six losses have come by more than one score. They’ve scored more than 17 points just once: in a 30-23 loss to Seattle, when they trailed 30-13 in the fourth quarter.

McDaniel, the former Dolphins head coach, is facing particular scrutiny. Many had viewed him as an upgrade over his predecessor, Greg Roman. But the offense was again ineffective in Kansas City: Justin Herbert threw his eighth interception, and Los Angeles managed just 259 total yards.

Injuries add to the challenge

Harbaugh would not use the team’s many absences as an excuse. Offensive linemen Rashawn Slater, Tyler Biadasz and Trey Pipkins are on injured reserve, as are tight end David Njoku and linebacker Denzel Perryman. Also out Sunday were right tackle Joe Alt (neck), left guard Kayode Awosika (fibula), wide receiver Tre’ Harris (thigh), cornerback Donte Jackson (thigh) and safety Derwin James (thigh).

Wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who had just returned from a foot injury, left in the first half with a concussion. Backup defensive back Deane Leonard also entered the concussion protocol in the second half. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the injury list was one of the longest he had ever seen.

Herbert is also the Chargers’ leading rusher

Herbert completed 22 of 37 passes for 204 yards. He threw his interception right into the hands of Chiefs linebacker Jack Cochrane, who nearly returned it for a touchdown. Herbert was also the Chargers’ leading rusher, with five carries for 26 yards. Kimani Vidal had 21 yards on seven attempts, and Omarion Hampton gained 18 on seven carries.

“This is where we are right now. We have to look forward, understand where we stand and what we need to do, and do our best to get out of it,” Herbert said. “We have a bye next week, and we’ll do everything we can. After that, we’ll focus on the next opponent and try to win that game.”
