Dan Rooney ist am Donnerstag im Alter von 84 Jahren verstorben, wie die Steelers bekanntgaben. Eine Todesursache wurde nicht genannt.

Rooney übernahm das oprative Geschäft bei den Steelers in den 1960er Jahren und wurde im Jahr 2000 für seine Leistungen zur Weiterentwicklung des Spiels selbst in die Hall of Fame gewählt.

Rooney’s Vater, Art, hatte die Steelers im Jahr 1933 gegründet. Sechsmal konnte Pittsburgh unter der Führung der Rooneys die Super Bowl gewinnen.

Rooney, der von 2009 bis 2012 auch US-Botschafter in Irland war, hatte seinen ersten Job bei den Steelers mit zwölf Jahren übernommen und arbeitete sich vom Wasserträger über zahlreiche Bürojobs durch die Organisation der Steelers.

Bekannt wurde er auch durch die „Rooney Rule“, wonach bei Vorstellungsgesprächen für das Amt des Headcoachs auch Vertreter von ethnischen Minderheiten interviewt werden mussten.

Dan Rooney was a great friend of mine, but more importantly, he was a great friend to the people of Pittsburgh, a model citizen, and someone who represented the United States with dignity and grace on the world stage. I knew he’d do a wonderful job when I named him as our United States Ambassador to Ireland, but naturally, he surpassed my high expectations, and I know the people of Ireland think fondly of him today. And I know the people of Pittsburgh, who loved him not only for the Super Bowl championships he brought as the owner of the Steelers, but for his generosity of spirit, mourn his passing today. It is a sad day for my family and me. My father meant so much to all of us, and so much to so many past and present members of the Steelers organization. He gave his heart and soul to the Steelers, the National Football League, and the City of Pittsburgh.

We will celebrate his life and the many ways he left us in a better place.
