His long-awaited return lasted just one play. After missing three NFL games with an ankle injury, Lamar Jackson was finally back on the field as the starting quarterback against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. But his comeback was over after just one pass attempt.

Jackson was looking to hit wide receiver Zay Flowers when his right hand collided with the arm of Bills pass rusher Greg Rousseau as he threw. The 29-year-old immediately appeared to be in pain, showed his thumb to the medical staff and left the field shortly afterward.

The medical staff took Jackson to the locker room for an examination. The Ravens initially listed their quarterback as questionable to return. Before the end of the first quarter, however, it was clear he would not play again.

Lamar Jackson Needs Surgery; Season Could Be Over

After the game, Ravens head coach Jesse Minter confirmed fans’ worst fears. Jackson will need surgery for an injury to his right thumb.

The quarterback is also expected to be placed on injured reserve. That means he will miss at least four more NFL games.

Even more concerning, Minter said there is a fear Jackson may be unavailable for the rest of the 2026 season. No final decision has been made on whether his season is over.

Further details about the exact diagnosis or the planned date of the surgery were not immediately available.

This is already Jackson’s second significant injury setback of the season. In Week 4, he suffered a high ankle sprain against the Tennessee Titans and then missed three games.

As recently as Friday, Minter had confirmed Jackson would return against Buffalo. Jackson took part in every practice during the week and was looking forward to the matchup with Josh Allen.

Now the Ravens once again have to plan for an extended stretch without their most important offensive player.

Ravens’ Quarterback Nightmare Ends in Lopsided Loss

To make matters worse, Jackson was not the only quarterback to get injured against Buffalo.

Tyler Huntley initially took over the offense after Jackson left. But the backup also had to exit the game early with a toe injury.

That brought rookie Joe Fagnano into the spotlight. The quarterback, originally designated as the third emergency option, had to make his NFL debut against a strong Bills defense.

On the field, it turned into a disappointing afternoon for Baltimore.

The Buffalo Bills won convincingly, 36-10. Quarterback Josh Allen threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns, while the Ravens offense struggled to find answers without Jackson.

Baltimore is now 4-4 after the loss. The Jacksonville Jaguars are up next on Thursday.

That makes preparations especially difficult for head coach Jesse Minter. In addition to Jackson’s long-term absence, Tyler Huntley’s availability is also uncertain for now.

One thing is clear: Hopes of turning the season around with Jackson’s return were dashed after just one play. Now the Ravens are even worried their quarterback may not play again this season.
