Brandon Aiyuk and the 49ers are currently embroiled in a bonus dispute. According to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer, the receiver owes his San Francisco team about $13 million. The money is tied to bonus payments Aiyuk may have to repay. The outstanding amount could make it harder for him to secure a release or otherwise part ways with the 49ers.

The NFL Players Association and the NFL Management Council are currently working to resolve the situation. The 49ers and Aiyuk could agree on a repayment. If they cannot, the dispute could be decided through arbitration.

San Francisco placed Aiyuk on the Reserve/Left Team list last December. The move came after the receiver stopped reporting to the team facility while rehabbing a torn ACL. Brandon Aiyuk requested reinstatement this week. According to his new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, he plans to report to the team facility on Friday.

“We’ll be there Friday at 3 p.m. to meet with the team at the facility. We’ll do our best and then move forward,” Rosenhaus told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday.

Aiyuk’s future in San Francisco remains uncertain

Once Aiyuk is reinstated, the 49ers can decide whether to keep him or part ways with him. General manager John Lynch had already said earlier this year that it was “safe to say” the receiver had played his last snap for San Francisco.

Aiyuk has not played an NFL snap since tearing his ACL in October 2024. Just a few months earlier, the 49ers had signed him to a four-year, $120 million contract extension. The deal included $76 million in guarantees, including a $23 million signing bonus.

San Francisco voided the guarantees because of Aiyuk’s extended absence during the 2025 season. Before then, he had been a dependable part of the offense. Before his knee injury, he had recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards in each of two consecutive seasons.

The 49ers selected Aiyuk in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. His future in San Francisco now also depends on how the bonus dispute is resolved.
