Die NFL untersuchte die Vorwürfe, dass die verwendeten Bälle im AFC Championship Game nicht korrekt aufgepumpt wären. Laut ESPN fand die Liga heraus, dass tatsächlich 11 von 12 verwendeten Bällen zu wenig Luft enthielten.
Die fraglichen Bälle enthielten pro Ball ca. 2 “Pounds of air” zu wenig. Dies entspricht einer Unterbefüllung von knapp 0,14 Bar.
Bisher kommentierte die Liga ihre Entdeckung und deren mögliche Folgen noch nicht. Die Patriots kooperieren mit der Liga bei dieser Untersuchung.

Was sind die möglichen Folgen?
Das Regelbuch sieht hierfür disziplinäre Maßnahmen vor, die wie folgt lauten:
If any individual alters the footballs, or if a non-approved ball is used in the game, the person responsible and, if appropriate, the head coach or other club personnel will be subject to discipline, including but not limited to, a fine of $25,000.
Die Strafen reichen aber auch bis zum Verlust von Draftpicks.
